PORTUGUESE / ENGLISH SIMUL INTERPRETATION WORKSHOP at the MONTEREY INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES


Description:


This 20-hour intensive, hands-on course provides participants an opportunity to experience the challenge and excitement of simultaneous interpretation in a controlled setting, with extensive feedback from the instructor and effective peer review. The workshop uses an innovative approach of practice followed by discussion and selfassessment, and has been successfully conducted in Brazil for over eight years. The course’s main purpose is to give participants first-hand experience in the interpretation booth, through staged exercises followed by an in-depth exploration of the important historic and theoretical underpinnings of conference interpretation. Candidates must be fluent in English and Portuguese and have at least some translation or interpreting experience. The course is recommended for translators, community interpreters, court/healthcare interpreters in the Portuguese/English language pair.


About The Instructor


EWANDRO MAGALHÃES


Ewandro Magalhães is a native of Brazil, and a seasoned conference interpreter, translator, trainer and author. He has interpreted at over 1,000 days of conferences in Brazil, Africa and the United States. He is a contractor with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. He was also personal interpreter to the Speaker of the House and Vice-President in Brazil, and has accompanied several heads of State and Government during their official visits. Professor Magalhães created and conducted a series of interpreter training courses across Brazil. To his extensive professional credentials he will add an MA in Conference Interpretation from the Monterey Institute of International Studies in May of 2008.
